Around
Midnight

the lights are too bright, and the
spurious alcoholic shine
in the eyes of the people around
me doesn't make up for
knowing I must stay alert to hear
what they are saying. One
couple in the carriage behind...
and the red first class seats
tilt back. I'm sleeping before we
get to Kaihoura. But I want
to be stopped on the edge of
growling gnashy waves that
drag and skid up the gravel.
Clyde and McGregor are in love
with the two paintings side-by-side
in my hallway.
The one who is
left gets the other painting, but Clyde
is giving me his Around Midnight
to renew me going off to sleep.
